When Victor Canning is on form, he's great. His private detective stories are wonderful post-war escapism that epitomise the mood of Britain in the 1940s and 1950s. This, however, isn't his best work. It tells of an identity swap in which the fiancee of one of those swapping identities apparently doesn't realise what's going on. However, Canning is an entertaining storyteller, so if you can put up with a couple of plot weaknesses that you could drive an articulated truck through, this should see you through a bumpy flight or a few hours in an airport waiting room.
