I remember reading this series when it first came out under the name Poppy ... This was a good starting first book in a trilogy where different creatures are related to different magics. Mages = mind magic, Shifters = body magic, and Vampires = soul magic.Simon is a mage struggling to advance from apprentice status. Apparently in this world, none of the magics are supposed to have dealing with, or associate with each other; Simon's mind magic responds to a desperate plea for help by children of a local werewolf pack (body magic) and leads him to rescue them from a demon and two humans.Then the story really begins. There is general, background information hinted at, there are twists and turns on who is good and who is bad, and little surprised to keep you thinking.The story ended with a happy for now ending for the main two characters, but the overall storyline will continue in the second book, with a fine conclusion in the third book. 5 stars
